Can the sky be mastered? One day we woke up and suddenly everything turned blue, with phrases that felt like they came from somewhere above us. The culprit? HUMBE. His sensitivity, always paired with poetic mastery, reminded us once again of the force contained in his words. His new album, DUEÑO DEL CIELO, along with a date at the Palacio de los Deportes, confirms something we already suspected: his music is completely in sync with the heartbeat.

HUMBE is a necessary artist. With the release of his most recent song, MORFINA, we understood what it means to give everything to rhyme. In this fifth album, his independence shines brighter than ever, introducing new experimental anthems like VEGAS, REM II, and MAGIA NEGRA, alongside skin-tingling experiences like ORIGAMI and MURALLAS, expanding his sonic range and securing his place in the global music scene.

Just days before his show on Sunday, November 30, and with the official announcement of DUEÑO DEL CIELO, we had the privilege of speaking with him about his inspirations and the importance of claiming what we observe around us:

SELECT ISHTAR: DUEÑO DEL CIELO marks a new era for you. What part of your independence—creative, personal, or spiritual—did you want to have tattooed into this album that symbolizes the end of a trilogy?

HUMBE: Making a 22-track album. For a long time, I’ve wanted to create something this extensive, because I feel it allows me to convey my message properly and invite people into my universe. My biggest leap in this independence was making an album this long and… this packed.

SI: In a moment when music is consumed in a rush, your songs feel like a “whisper to the heart,” inviting people to listen with ears connected to emotion. What role do these deep pieces play in your evolution as an artist?

H: It’s the most varied album I’ve ever made, and the time I’ve most fully opened up exploring messages within myself, within my family, within my friends—searching for that nectar where inspiration comes from.

Each of the songs plays a very important role in the album: they’re experiences that form part of a story that travels through the stages of grieving someone. And not necessarily someone external; it can be yourself.

The album is born from the thought: “When you think you have nothing left, where do you look?” When there’s nothing—on an empty planet where everything is destroyed—you look at the sky. You look at what remains, where you might find some kind of peace. From there comes the title: realizing you can create your own paradise just by looking at the sky, at a beautiful sunset… having a horrible day and ending it with a beautiful sky, you know?

SI: With this contemplative, narrative-filled album, if DUEÑO DEL CIELO were a movie, how would you describe the opening scene?

H: I think the opening scene would literally be a house after it burned down. It’s no longer there; the fire is gone, but it’s still burning. Just smoke coming out of everywhere, leaving a trace that something happened…

SI: Your preparation for the Palacio has revealed new sonic and physical explorations. During the process of this album, what musical discovery (a rhythm, an instrument, a reference, a vibe) surprised you the most and ended up changing the direction of the project?

H: Yes. This album has been influenced by all kinds of rhythms: from rock to hip-hop, afrobeat, country, pop, and even reggaeton. It’s an album that let everything fall into it. I don’t know how people will describe it or what genre they’ll give it… I think it’s simply universally alternative. And although genres don’t really matter anymore, I’m convinced that what we did with DUEÑO DEL CIELO is very ambitious, and it’s made me feel more like a dancer all of a sudden. I feel my body much looser.

SI: Was there a genre or something that changed the course of your album at some point?

H: Yes: chachachá. It’s a genre that comes from Cuba and it’s beautiful, and it’s present in one of my favorite songs on this album, “VEGAS,” which we’ve been working on for years.

As a final push for the album, we went to Iceland for a month and a half to write some songs, with the intention of making the album, as you say, contemplative—but leaning more toward the ethereal, without much rhythm. We were surprised that, surrounded by calm and mountains, the first song we wrote was a chachachá that feels more Caribbean than Nordic. DUEÑO DEL CIELO travels through many worlds and connects strongly and perfectly.

When you’re in writing sessions, ideas can come from anywhere. We were playing around in the studio, and with a sound that came from behind the synthesizer, we finished a song that ended up leading the project.

SI: Mexico City woke up with the phrase DUEÑO DEL CIELO, and you became that symbol. If you’ve already conquered one sky, what new skies do you aspire to now?

H: I imagine myself singing in Japan… I mean, imagine that! One day I know it’ll take me there.

SI: Your family has been a fundamental part of your musical path. How were they involved in this new era, and what did working with them bring you emotionally in this album?

H: My brother is my right hand and I’m his, and I love that he’s part of my project because he’s my partner—he’s with me, looking out for me. Having someone like that is important, especially in this industry, because I always feel accompanied.

My family is present in every song: from the writing alone, my mom and dad are always there. DUEÑO DEL CIELO is an album I wrote with Emiliano, sometimes together and sometimes apart. I wish everyone could have a connection with their siblings or friends like that, because connecting creatively is beautiful.

SI: If you could leave just one image, one phrase, or one feeling with people this Sunday at the Palacio de los Deportes, what would it be and why?

H: The stage. It’s striking.

SI: To finish: is there something that excites you about your show at the Palacio de los Deportes?

H: There will be a live orchestra. That’s the most special thing for me because I’ve wanted to have one onstage my whole life, and it will make DUEÑO DEL CIELO something so special and unique.

After the interview, we had the opportunity to attend the show and confirm that the stage was the most vivid and reflective image among a crowd dressed as sky. At this listening party, HUMBE feels ready to write history with 22 songs that, between tears and goosebumps, will officially see the light this Saturday, December 6.
